PHYSICAL SCIENCE
This course gives the student an overview of chemistry and physics, while
deemphasizing math. Topics in chemistry will include the nature of
science, the properties and states of matter, the structure of atoms and
molecules and chemical bonding. Also in chemistry some attention will be given
to chemical reactions, the making of solutions especially acids, bases and
salts and finally some nuclear chemistry. In physics, the topics will
include forces and motion, acceleration, work and energy and some electricity
and magnetism. The course will be a combination of lecture, labs and
demonstrations, with some emphasis on graphing, the metric system, and the use
of simple measuring instruments. (Prerequisite: None)
BIOLOGY
The student will study all aspects of biology particularly with an emphasis
placed on physiology. The course of study will follow an introduction to
science, chemistry as a basis of physiology, a survey of organisms, physiology
of life processes, genetics, evolution and environment. (Prerequisite:
Physical Science or consent of the science faculty.)
EARTH SCIENCE
This course will focus on the chemistry of the earth. This course will
investigate the composition of the earth and how reactions between the elements
create rocks and minerals. The students will focus on the earth’s
process of rock formation, oceanic activity, and how earthquakes and volcanic
activity are related to this process. (prerequisite: World Geography)
EARTH SCIENCE II
This Course will investigate space and the earth’s weather.
Students will investigate how the relationships of the earth with the sun,
moon, other planets, and galaxies. This course will also focus on how
weather and climate are created within the earth’s atmosphere.
(prerequisite: World Geography)
CHEMISTRY
Chemistry is the science of the changes in matter. The course is designed
to give the student an understanding of atomic theory, and proper laboratory
techniques. The course explores concepts of matter and energy, atomic
structure and bonding, chemical formulas and equations and chemical kinetics
and reactions. Safe and efficient handling of laboratory apparatus and
equipment is taught. (Prerequisite: Biology, Algebra 1- Algebra 2
(concurrently)
PHYSICS
Physics is the most complete of all sciences. It introduces complex explanations
of physical phenomena, based on universal principles stated in the concise and
powerful language of mathematics. It is suggested for the student who is
considering a college education. (Prerequisite: Chemistry, consent
of science faculty)
HONORS CHEMISTRY 1
This course is offered to sophomores who have successfully completed Honors
Biology. The course is an intensive study exploring concepts of matter,
energy, atomic structure and bonding, chemical formulas and equations and
chemical kinetics and reactions, as well as a chapter on stoichiometry.
Safe and efficient handling of laboratory apparatus and equipment is
taught. A unit on prolife chemistry from outside sources is included.
(Prerequisite: Algebra 1/Honors Algebra 1)
HONORS CHEMISTRY II
This is a course for the serious chemistry student. After a review of
some key elements of Chem. 1 (especially stoichiometry), we will cover the
properties of gases, liquids, and solids as well as their mixtures and
solutions. Acids and bases will be covered in detail followed by chemical
equilibrium and oxidation-reduction reactions. Depending on time and
interest, a couple units of organic chemistry and Eco-chemistry may be
covered. Attention will be given to more advanced labs that may require
some out-of-school and after-school work.
HONORS BIOLOGY 1
Recommended for incoming freshmen that show a keen interest in the science of
living things. While major topics of the regular biology program are
retained, students are given more time for laboratory experiences.
Inquiry, observation and critical analysis are stressed. (Prerequisite:
8th grade test scores and teacher recommendation)
HONORS BIOLOGY 2
Offered to Juniors and Seniors (and Sophomores with teacher approval).
This course includes an intensive study of general and specific aspects of
Biology with emphasis on the chemical basis of life. It will include a
unit on the biochemical compounds that make up living things. It will
also include an in-depth study of the taxonomic groups, cell structure,
genetics and physical anthropology.. This course is taught as an
introductory college-level course. (Prerequisite: Chemistry I and
Biology I)
HONORS PHYSICS
Physics is the most complete of all sciences. It introduces simple
explanations of physical phenomena, based on universal principles stated in the
concise and powerful language of mathematics. It is required for the
student considering a career in medicine, engineering, or science.
(Prerequisite: Chemistry, consent of science faculty, Pre-Calculus
(concurrently))
ECOLOGY
The course will deal with the complex issues facing the environment today.
Students will study natural ecosystems, how they form and are balanced, and how
they evolve or change. Attention will be paid to individual animals, their
habitats and niches, as well as the real issues and challenges relating to an
expanding human population. A research project will be required each
semester. Outside work to beautify the environment will be a regular part
of the class. (Prerequisite: Physical Science or Biology and
teacher approval. Not recommended for college-bound students.)
