FRENCH 1
This course will provide students an opportunity to begin to speak and to
comprehend basic French; and to develop listening, reading and writing skills
in French. The course will also promote awareness of French culture and
influence in our society. Active class participation is required.
(Prerequisite: None)
FRENCH 2
French 2 begins with a review of Level 1 and builds from there. The
students will broaden their ability to communicate through expanded vocabulary
study and through the addition of more complex tenses and grammatical
structures. Cultural study will expand to focus on various sections of
HONORS FRENCH 3
French 3 continues the development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing
skills begun in Levels 1 and 2. The ability to communicate continues to
broaden through expanded vocabulary study. Both composition and cultural
background receive more emphasis than in Levels 1 and 2. Students are
introduced to French literature through short stories and one novel.
Active class participation in required.
(Prerequisite: French 1 - French 2)
HONORS FRENCH 4
Advanced students will continue to refine listening, speaking, reading, and
writing skills through conversation, composition, and literature. Works
by selected authors are covered in their entirety. Culture expands to
include a survey of French history. Active class participation is
required. (Prereq.: Hon. Fr. 3)
GERMAN 1
German 1 will provide students an opportunity to comprehend basic German; and
to develop listening, reading and writing skills in German. This course
will also develop and promote an awareness and an appreciation of German
culture and influence in both American and European societies. This
course is designed to personalize the German language to a level in which the
student can express in simple terms information about himself/herself in short
concise statements in the German language. (Prerequisite: None)
GERMAN 2
German 2 begins with overall review of German 1 and builds from there.
The students will expand their ability to communicate by increasing their
vocabulary study and through the addition of more complex grammatical
structures. The student's knowledge of German culture and everyday German
life will also be increased. Active participation is required.
(Prerequisite: German 1)
HONORS GERMAN 3
German 3 begins with an overall review of German 2 and builds from there.
The students will expand their ability to communicate by using more complex
sentences. The increased vocabulary will enhance more lengthy
conversations. More complex grammatical structures will be used.
Graded culture readers will be used that feature biographies of famous
historical Germans. Everyday German life will be discussed through
translations of current magazines printed in the German language. Active
participation is required. (Prerequisite: German 2)
HONORS GERMAN 4
German 4 will provide students with the opportunity to use as much German as
possible with only limited dialogue in English. Advanced comprehension of
vocabulary, grammatical structure, and current slang expressions will be used
as much as possible. This course will promote knowledge of German life
including dating, driver education, various job vocations and the school system
in
SPANISH 1
The beginning course emphasizes the correct reading, writing, speaking, and
aural comprehension of Spanish. There is much stress on an acceptable
pronunciation at this level. The students will be introduced to the
customs of the Spanish-speaking people and their cultures. (Prerequisite:
None)
SPANISH 2
The intermediate course begins with a general review of the grammatical
structures covered in Spanish 1. The skills of reading, writing,
speaking, and aural understanding are further developed. An even greater
emphasis is placed on the oral-aural aspects of the language. The
customs, culture, and history of Spanish-speaking peoples are explored in
greater detail than at the first year level. (Prerequisite: Spanish
1)
HONORS SPANISH 3
The advanced course starts with an intensive review of all elements previously
studied in Spanish 2. Using Spanish as the sole means of communication is
the goal, and is sought by means of writing compositions, presentation of short
talks, reading short selections, general conversation, and listening to a wide
variety of spoken material, including vocational applications of the
language. (Prerequisite: Spanish 2)
HONORS SPANISH 4
The mastery of Spanish as a tool of communication by the student is further
nurtured. In addition to the areas covered in Spanish 3, selected
literary works are read and discussed - both in spoken and written form.
